The best recruiters for founding engineers in 2026

The firms and platforms startups use to hire their first engineers, what each one is good for, and how to choose. We’re on the list, so we’ve said where we fit

The right recruiter for a founding engineer depends on what you need. Zelcast introduces a few engineers chosen for a specific early-stage team. Recruiting from Scratch and Hunt Club run startup searches, Paraform gives you many independent recruiters at once, Dover pairs recruiting software with recruiting help, and Riviera Partners and Daversa Partners run retained searches for engineering leaders. Wellfound and Y Combinator’s Work at a Startup are job platforms.

We run one of these firms, so read this with that in mind. We’ve tried to describe each option the way its own customers would, and to say plainly when someone else is the better choice.

Zelcast

A talent agency for engineers. We get to know engineers before any role exists and introduce a small number of them to startups under 100 people, each with our case for why they fit. Companies pay 15% of first-year base when someone is hired and nothing before. Best for founders who want a few strong introductions for their first ten engineers. Less suited to hiring many engineers at once.

Recruiting from Scratch

A recruiting firm that works mostly with venture-backed startups and publishes a large library of guides on hiring founding engineers. A good fit if you want a conventional agency search run by people who know early-stage hiring.

Hunt Club

A recruiting firm built around referrals from a large network of industry professionals. Strongest for leadership and senior roles, where a trusted referral matters most.

Paraform

A marketplace where a company posts a role to many independent recruiters at once and pays the one who makes the hire. Useful when you want breadth and speed and are comfortable managing many sources.

Dover

Recruiting software for startups, including an applicant tracking system, with recruiting help available on top. A good fit for founders who want to run most of the process themselves with better tools.

Riviera Partners and Daversa Partners

Retained executive search firms. Riviera focuses on engineering and technology leaders such as CTOs and VPs of engineering, and Daversa works with venture-backed companies on executive hires. The right call when your first engineering hire is really a technical leader.

Wellfound and Work at a Startup

Job platforms. Wellfound, formerly AngelList Talent, is one of the best-known marketplaces for startup jobs, and Y Combinator’s Work at a Startup lists roles at YC companies. Both are inexpensive and good for reach, though the strongest founding engineers are usually employed and not browsing.

How to choose

Decide first whether you need breadth or judgment. If you can evaluate engineers well yourself and simply need more of them, a platform or a marketplace is efficient. If the hard part is knowing who is actually great and getting them to talk to you, pay for judgment and access. Ask any firm how many people they expect to introduce, how they know those people, and whether they have ever told a candidate not to take a job. How much it costs to hire an engineer covers what you’ll pay.

Common questions

What is the best recruiter for hiring a founding engineer?
It depends on what you need. Zelcast makes a few introductions chosen for an early-stage team, Recruiting from Scratch and Hunt Club run startup searches, Paraform offers many independent recruiters, Dover pairs software with recruiting help, and Riviera and Daversa run retained searches for engineering leaders.
How much do recruiters charge to hire a founding engineer?
Contingency agencies commonly charge 20 to 25 percent of first-year base, paid when the person starts, and retained searches split a similar fee into stages. Zelcast charges 15% of first-year base when someone is hired.
Should a seed-stage startup use a recruiter for its first engineer?
Often not for the first one or two, who usually come from the founders’ own networks. A recruiter earns its fee when the network runs dry, or when the role needs someone the founders can’t find or judge on their own.
